Today, more than 1.5 million patients have experienced  the benefits from PillCam capsule endoscopy.  

PillCam SB is the most widely used tool for visualizing the small bowel to detect and monitor abnormalities. Physicians may detect and monitor lesions, ulcers, tumors and bleeding within the small bowel.

The doctor or nurse will prepare you for the examination by placing sensors on your abdomen. The video capsule is swallowed with water. It passes naturally through your digestive tract while taking pictures every few seconds and transmitting them to a device on a belt. The capsule then passes harmlessly from your body through a normal bowel movement.

The most common advantages of the PillCam are:

1. It is the only capsule endoscope indicated for use in patients aged two years or older.
2. It is able to directly see the early stages of small bowel ulceration, where an MRE or CTE might not.
3. The PillCam SB comes with a price tag of roughly $500, a fraction of the thousands of dollars needed for a colonoscopy.

But nothing is perfect. There are some disadvantages and risks in PillCam capsule endoscopy.

1. PillCam SB cannot remove any polyps detected along the intestinal track, an advantage that still belongs to colonoscopies.
2. In about 7% of exams, the capsule does not view the entire small bowel prior to the battery running out.
3. The capsule is purely diagnostic and cannot be used to take biopsies, apply therapy.

The technology offers a minimally invasive complementary option to existing colonoscopy. Its use can reduce the risk of bowel perforation and avoid the need for sedation. For now it has been used just for diagnosis, however there a lot of potential for using them to treat and cure diseases.
